AWS User Group Cebu: Bringing Cloud, AI and Cybersecurity Beyond Manila

Cebu, Philippines -- The Philippine technology industry is often discussed through the lens of Metro Manila, but one of the country's most active technology communities is demonstrating what can happen when cloud and AI education is built around a regional ecosystem.
The AWS User Group Cebu brought developers, students, cloud practitioners and technology leaders together for AWS Community Day Cebu 2026 on September 12 at the Performing Arts Hall of the University of the Philippines Cebu. The community-led event focused on cloud, artificial intelligence and practical technology development.
The program went beyond traditional conference presentations. Participants could join workshops and technical sessions covering AI-assisted software development, edge AI, API security, cloud infrastructure and software-defined radio.
One workshop, for example, explored AI-assisted development using Kiro, AWS's agentic development environment. Another demonstrated an edge-AI pipeline using ESP32 hardware, AWS Lambda, Rekognition, Bedrock and Polly. A separate security laboratory allowed participants to deploy, attack and harden an API using OWASP's crAPI, while discussing practical controls such as least-privilege access, secrets management and rate limiting.
That combination is significant because it reflects the way technology is converging.
Cloud computing is no longer an isolated infrastructure discussion. AI applications depend on cloud services. Those applications need APIs. APIs need security. Edge devices increasingly connect physical environments to cloud-based AI systems.
The Cebu community therefore becomes a useful microcosm of the broader technology industry.
AWS provides the technology ecosystem around which the community develops, while local technology practitioners, companies, universities and community partners provide the human infrastructure. The event lists professionals from organizations including Factory Technologies, VBP, Fullspeed Technologies, ADEX Technology, DAP Brands, Apper Cloud Labs and others among its speakers and contributors.
The community's education effort also extends to students. AWS User Group Cebu held a Student Community Day at UP Cebu on August 30, bringing students together with practitioners and supporting student builder groups from universities around Cebu.
This regional approach matters for the Philippines because technology employment is no longer geographically tied to Manila in the same way it once was. Cloud platforms allow Filipino professionals to build and support systems for companies around the country—and increasingly for international organizations.
Community events can help close the gap between what students learn academically and what companies actually expect from technology workers. They also create something that online tutorials cannot easily reproduce: a network of people. A student can meet a software engineer. A developer can meet a cybersecurity practitioner. A startup founder can meet someone who understands cloud infrastructure. A university group can connect with industry.
That network effect is one of the most important contributions technology communities make.
AWS User Group Cebu's 2026 activities show that the country's cloud and AI ecosystem is not being built exclusively in the capital. It is being developed in regional communities where students, professionals and businesses are learning together.
